Meaning & story
The Seated Western Pure Land Trinity
The story of the Pure Land Trinity
In Pure Land tradition, the Western Trinity consists of Amitabha Buddha with the bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta. Together they express devotion to the Western Pure Land of Sukhavati, compassion, and guidance on the path of practice.
Meaning of the ensemble
The three figures invite reflection on compassion, wisdom, and faith expressed through good conduct. For Pure Land practitioners, the ensemble offers a focus for reciting the Buddha’s name, cultivating kindness, and caring for others.
Serenity in the seated lotus composition
All three figures sit on lotus pedestals, with Amitabha Buddha at the centre resting both hands in his lap in meditation. The two bodhisattvas sit on either side, creating a balanced composition. Peaceful expressions, flowing robes, and layers of carved lotus petals lend the ensemble a contemplative presence, inviting calm attention and reverence.
Placement suggestions
Arrange the ensemble on a Buddhist altar with balanced spacing between the three figures. Choose a stable surface wide enough for the set and keep the surrounding space clean so every figure remains clearly visible.
