What Affects the Price of Wooden Buddha Statues and Altars?

Two Buddha statues of the same 80 cm height can differ noticeably in price, which often puzzles buyers. In reality the price of fine woodwork depends on several factors at once. Understanding them helps you compare quotes fairly and know what to ask.
1. The wood and the quality of the blank
This is usually the biggest factor. Prices vary by species, age and the quality of the block: a solid blank with few knots, few cracks and a handsome grain is harder to find than a joined blank or one with many defects. Note that the same trade name can refer to different woods, so ask for the specific wood and its origin. See also choosing wood for Buddha statues and altars.
2. Size and the amount of wood used
The larger the statue or altar, the larger the block it needs, the more work it takes and the harder it is to find a solid blank. Price rarely rises in proportion to height: a statue twice as tall may need more than twice the wood, because volume grows in all three dimensions.
3. Complexity of the figure and the carving
A figure with few details takes less work than layered figures such as the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara, the Western Pure Land Trinity, or pieces with halos, lotus bases and dense patterns. The skill of the artisan, the hours of carving and the difficulty of each line all go into the price of a piece.
4. Surface finish and decorative details
Even for the same model, the finish can differ. Matte PU or varnish depending on your preference, or gold-plated accents as on some Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Jade Emperor and Hung Dao Dai Vuong (Tran Quoc Tuan) statues, all change the work and materials involved.
5. Custom orders
Ready-made models usually have a more predictable cost. When you want a particular size, pose or detail, the craftsman has to sketch, choose a suitable blank and make the piece from scratch, so time and cost will differ.
6. Warranty, delivery and installation
A good quote states what is included. Ask about the warranty (products at Nhung Hai carry a 1-year structural warranty), packaging, delivery and installation where you live. Only compare two quotes when they cover the same wood, the same size and the same terms.
What to prepare when asking for a quote
- The model you are interested in (a link or the product name).
- The size you want, or the measurements of the space if you have not chosen one.
- Finish requirements (PU or varnish, with or without gold-plated accents).
- The delivery address and when you need it.
Nhung Hai quotes the price of each piece directly based on this information. Browse the current models on the products page or contact us for advice and a quote.
